This is a good selection of the Scottish border ballads, with an introduction by James Reed and helpful maps of the territories of the "surnames" (he Border equivalent of Highland clans) and of the 5/5(1). Border ballads, like all traditional ballads, were traditionally sung unaccompanied.
There may be a repeating motif, but there is no "chorus" as in most popular songs. The supernatural is a common theme in border ballads, as are recountings of raids and battles.
